Beijing: China further reiterated its close ties with Russia on Thursday, claiming that the strategic cooperative nature of their partnership has a “strong internal driving force” and is not something that would be altered by “external forces.” The Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Lin Jian, reiterated that no third party can sabotage the ties between Beijing and Moscow, including the United States.
China Reacts to U.S. Comments
Lin Jian said the statements by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which claimed that the China-Russia alliance would make things difficult for the United States, were absurd. In an exclusive interview with Breitbart News, Rubio said Russia, which he called China’s ‘forever junior partner,’ is becoming increasingly reliant on China and poses problems for Washington as one nuclear power becomes dependent on another.
Rubio also asked if Washington could ever completely distance itself from the China-Russia relationship. That he likened it to US President Richard Nixon’s infamous 1972 trip to China designed, in part, to split China and the Soviet Union apart to isolate Moscow even further.
The Strategic Consequences of China–Russia Relations
Rubio also expressed scepticism on whether a split in the China-Russia alliance would be a good thing, even as he acknowledged his concerns about it, the China Morning Post reported. He said the increasing proximity of these two superpowers does not bode well for a stable world, especially with their nuclear arsenals.
Their partnership is proving to be problematic for America, and for their part, the alliance between Beijing and Moscow may ultimately be more problematic for the pair of countries as Russian reliance on China grows, Rubio said; adding extreme discord between them could destabilise the world.
China’s Firm Response
Lin Jian, one of two delegates representing the province, dismissed Rubio’s claims, noting that China and Russia have their own long-term development plans and independent foreign policy agendas. He said, “Our relationship will forge ahead with its momentum, regardless of what happens in other parts of the world. He also dismissed U.S. efforts to create a rift between Beijing and Moscow, labelling them as “futile.”
Analysts say one reason Russian President Vladimir Putin has gotten increasingly close to Chinese President Xi Jinping is pushback from former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden against Russia.
Expanding sales to a partner that is not on the other side of the same coin With the establishment of a blockade against Chinese technological products, the Russian Federation is better equipped than most to fill the void.
In the aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, China and Russia have only drawn closer together in their strategic partnership. Beijing has not made significant efforts to end the war, despite refraining from openly supporting Moscow’s military plans. At the same time, Xi Jinping has reaffirmed that the partnership between China and Russia is “limitless.”
Feng Zhongping, Director of the Institute of European Studies at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said, “It is obviously not realistic that Moscow will separate itself from Beijing, especially in the context of present-day world geopolitics.” And he added, “It will not be in the interests of Russia to distance itself from Beijing.”
