New Delhi: A devastating stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night has claimed the lives of 18 people, including 14 women, and left dozens injured. The incident, which occurred around 10 PM on platforms 14 and 15, has been attributed to a sudden surge in crowds, primarily comprising pilgrims heading to the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj. The injured have been admitted to Lok Nayak Hospital for treatment, while authorities have announced compensation for the victims.
High-Level Probe Ordered
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “I am deeply distressed by the stampede-like situation at New Delhi Railway Station. My condolences to those who lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.” A high-level investigation has been ordered to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Political Reactions and Criticism
Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, condemned the incident, calling it a result of “railway mismanagement and government insensitivity.” In a post on X (formerly Twitter), he wrote, “The news of the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries, is extremely saddening and distressing. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families, and I hope for the swift recovery of the injured. This incident once again highlights the failure of the railways and the government’s insensitivity. Better arrangements should have been made at the station, given the large number of pilgrims heading to Prayagraj.”
Compensation Announced for Victims
The government has announced compensation for the victims. Families of the deceased will receive ₹10 lakh, while those seriously injured will be given ₹2.5 lakh, and those with minor injuries will receive ₹1 lakh.
Enhanced Security Measures
Following the tragedy, security has been tightened at Prayagraj Junction. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel have been deployed across the station premises, including foot overbridges, to manage the crowds effectively.
Railway Denies Platform Change Rumours
The Indian Railways has refuted social media rumours suggesting that the stampede was caused by last-minute platform changes. In a statement, the Railways clarified, “No platform was changed for any train. The information circulating on social media is incorrect.”
President Murmu and Amit Shah Express Grief
President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her sorrow, saying, “I am deeply saddened by the news of the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, and I pray for the swift recovery of the injured.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed his condolences and assured all possible assistance to the victims. He stated, “I have spoken to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and other officials. I have also directed the Delhi Lieutenant Governor and Police Commissioner to provide all necessary assistance. My condolences to the families of the deceased, and I pray for the speedy recovery of the injured.”
Authorities Investigate Cause
DCP Railways KPS Malhotra stated, “We had anticipated the crowd, but the incident happened so quickly. The Railways will investigate every aspect, and we will determine the causes behind this tragedy.”
The tragedy has sparked a debate on crowd management and safety protocols at major railway stations, especially during peak travel periods and religious events.
