Trump’s Inauguration: US And India Shake Off ‘Reset’ To Begin A New Chapter Of Ties

NewDelhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates Donald Trump on historic US inauguration as 47th President. Modi wrote in a post on X (formerly Twitter), ‘It was a pleasure to work together again to the benefit of both countries and shape a brighter future for the world.’ Ahead of Trump’s term, he wished the position success.

Last November the United States presidential election was held, and after Trump’s win, PM Modi had earlier called Trump to wish him well. Modi had also written on X during that conversation, “I had a very good discussion with my friend President Trump and congratulated him on his magnificent victory.” I would like to work together once again to advance India-US relations.”

After Trump’s inauguration, PM Modi sent India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to the United States with a letter sent by Modi to the newly elected president. In keeping with India’s custom of sending special envoys to the swearing-in of heads of state and government, Jaishankar has been present for the inauguration ceremony, sources told News18.

Last year, in February 2023, former Foreign Secretary S. Jaishankar visited Ghana to attend the inauguration of Ghana’s first female president, Nana Akufo Addo.

Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari attended the swearing-in ceremonies of Iran’s president last July, as did Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita at the ceremonies for Indonesian and Mexican presidents in October 2024, sources also said. Former Minister of State for External Affairs, Raj Kumar Ranjan Singh, was also present at the inauguration of the Philippine president in June this year.

Trump’s new term will feature an emphasis on bolstering India-US bilateral ties while demanding both groups tackle global challenges.
