Melbourne: In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series, the Indian cricket team, after losing to Australia by a large margin of 184 runs in the Melbourne Test match, now trailed in the series 2-1. As a result of their failure in the match, people started to discuss the possible reasons for the defeat, which quickly turned into a heated debate, especially on the topic of the performance of the young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal.
On the last day of the Test, India had to chase a massive target of 340 runs. The top order once again was not impressive, as only 9 runs were scored by captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul got out for a duck, and Virat Kohli could manage just 5 runs. Although Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant built a strong partnership to give some good hopes, India lost seven wickets in the third session, and finally suffered from the defeat.
During a post-match analysis on Star Sports, Mark Nicholas, a well-known British commentator, Justin Langer, a former Australian batsman, and Sanjay Manjrekar were present to examine the game. The conversation turned when Mayanti Langer, the anchor, raised the question to Nicholas about Jaiswal’s fielding performance mentioning the three drops he made on the fourth day which helped the Australian team.
Nicholas accepted that the dropped catches were really serious for the team. Nevertheless, Manjrekar intervened, claiming that it was not adequate to Jaiswal that he was to be blamed while he had scored runs in both innings. He emphasized that senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had no contribution in the match.
This statement led to a very brief argument about whether or not Jaiswal was solely responsible for the loss, with Manjrekar saying that Nicholas had no right to blame him if the whole team played badly. Nicholas stated that he was never blaming Jaiswal, just answering the question about their influence on the match.
The exchange reveals the high stress level that inexperienced players live in the most crucial scenarios and raises concerns over whether senior team members live up to their responsibilities. As the interest is ongoing in the performance of the Indian side and the route that they lay towards the future, everybody is observing the ways that the team will take in the upcoming games.
