Melbourne: Jasprit Bumrah is an Indian cricket star and vice-captain who has been in the news due to his exceptional bowling performance in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Nevertheless, the spectacular achievements brought him into the limelight, but, at the same time, his bowling motion was the subject of controversy, thus overshadowing the success he has had, with critics even questioning its legality.
Bumrah, the current number one Test bowler in the world, has appeared at the top of his game, as he has already achieved more than 20 wickets in just the first three matches of the series, leaving the Australian batsmen in much trouble. The peculiarity of his style has even brought in feelings of admiration from Australian cricket legends. Even though he is enjoying success, Bumrah’s reputation is still compromised as the fourth Test in Melbourne is on the horizon, with him facing the allegations of illegal bowling action.
The situation escalated when the prominent and veteran Australian cricket commentator Ian Morris asked if Bumrah’s bowling action is really legal, which got so many articles and social media posts”. Morris wrote, “Why has no one ever questioned the Indian fast bowler Bumrah’s action? Is it politically incorrect to do so these days? I’m not saying he’s throwing, but at least an analysis of his hand position at the time of delivery should be done.” Morris suggested that a closer examination of Bumrah’s arm position during delivery is warranted.
This is not the debut of Bumrah’s bowling action getting the spotlight. His unusual gesture has always been the reason for discussions, especially during the Perth Test, where he made the difference by taking five out of 10 wickets in total, leaving them at just 104. Even though he was outstanding, people were still discussing his bowling action on social media.
Throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Bumrah has been a true engine, taking 21 wickets in six innings over three matches. Most importantly, he reached a new record as the highest Indian wicket-taker in Australia during the Gabba Test by leaving behind the famous Kapil Dev, who had 51 Test wickets in Australia. So far, he has taken 53 wickets in 20 innings in Australia, showing that he is among the best bowlers of his generation.
As the Melbourne Test comes closer, people are still wondering if Bangar’s illegal bowling action will hurt his building career in any way. With all the doubts, Bumrah has been consistently excellent, which only goes to showcase his determination and strength. The Indian cricket team, along with fans all over the world, are counting the days until the end of the drama and are hoping it doesn’t steal the show from Bumrah’s incredible performances.
