NewDelhi:Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla made strict instructions not to allow protests at any of the gates of the parliament after an exchange of blows between the ruling party and the opposition party on Thursday. The unprecedented decision was made against the backdrop of recent tensions provoked by threats from the home minister, Amit Shah, about Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.
This happened on the parliamentary side at Makar Gate, where supporters of both extremes exchanged abusive sirens. The BJP even alleged that the opposition leader Rahul Gandhi had assaulted elderly MP Pratap Sarangi during the debacle, and the latter was hurt. BJP MP Mukesh Rajput was also said to have had his vehicle damaged and that two of his security personnel were injured.
The Congress party, however, had a different story to tell as they accused the BJP MPs of stopping Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and several women MPs from entering the complex.
The main cause of the issue lies in the words Shah said during a recent ‘75 Years of India’s Constitutional Journey’ debate in the Rajya Sabha. The opposition took out a video byte of Shah saying, “There is a new song now—Ambedkar, Ambedkar… If one had taken the name of God this number of times, he would have gotten heaven for seven births.”
The Congress party and other opposition parties accused Shah of disrespecting Ambedkar’s vision, while the BJP refuted the allegations and said that Congress has always let down Ambedkar—they even defeated him, they said.
In an attempt to control the increase in the incidence, the office of the Speaker Birla said, “No political party, member of parliament, or group of members will be permitted to hold any protest or demonstration at any gate of the Parliament House.”
This is the first time in Indian parliamentary history that the Rajya Sabha was staked to such an intolerably low level of political decency while the two factions of each party solidify their stances.
