Tehran: President Masoud Pejshekians decision to resist enforcing the hijab law, in Iran has caused a rift within the countrys leadership and resulted in the official suspension of the law due to escalating tensions, with Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The controversial bill that contained measures such, as the death penalty for women who disobeyed hijab rules has been put on hold temporarily after a face to face meeting between the nations figures. Reformist leader Ali Shakouri Rar revealed that President Pejeshkian expressed to Khamenei his concerns about the harm, to Iran if the law were enforced.
The Iranian Supreme National Security Council has asked Parliament to halt the enforcement of the “Hijab and Chastity” legislation so that the government can introduce a revised version of the bill, for consideration.
Amnesty International expressed disapproval of the law. Believed it would increase the mistreatment of women and girls while putting protestors at risk of facing death penalty charges. Mary Mohammadi, from Iran who is an analyst residing in the United States pointed out that the legislation aimed to raise the stakes for women challenging the status quo and stifle their capacity, for instigating change.
