Onion Prices Soar? Here Is How The Government Intendes To Reduce Costs

NewDelhi: To try and contain the current emerging high inflation rates, the government has offloaded about 840 tonnes of onions to the Kishanganj Railway Station in Delhi. In its statement, it states that this is the second big consignment received by rail after 1,600 tonnes which came by ‘Kanda Express’ on October 20. This shipment, which was sourced under the Price Stabilisation Fund arranged by the cooperative agency NAFED, will largely be supplied through the Azadpur Mandi. A part of it is sold at retail rate of ₹ 35 per kilogramme.

Onions Brought in by Train
At present, onion prices at the retail store in the nation’s capital are rangebound between ₹ 60/- and ₹ 80/- per kilogramme depending on the quality and area. This is the first time the government is undertaking rail transport in order to avoid unnecessary expenses and prolongation of time in delivering onions to various areas. NAFED had earlier on 26 October sent 840 Metric Tonnes of onions to Chennai and dispatched similar cargo from Nashik to Guwahati on Wednesday morning. The Plan in Action
As of now the National Cooperative Consumers Federation (NCCF) has scaled 104 destinations in 22 states in the country NAFED serves in 52 locations in 16 states. These agencies have made retail sales with safal, Kendriya Bhandar, and reliance retail at the price of ₹ 35/Kg. Further a total of 86,500 MT of onions are intended for retailing to nine state governments/ co-operatives.

This intervention has made it possible to stabilise retail prices in main states such as Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Delhi. The all India average retail price has been stable through the month of October. The present Nashik mandi prices have been declining from ₹ 47 per kg on 24-9 to the present price of ₹ 40. The statement further said that the rail consignment to Guwahati is anticipated to enhance the supply, ease prices in the northeastern states.
