Territorial Army Soldier Abducted In Anantnag; Body Found A Year Later

Anantnag: The cowardly actions of terrorists have resurfaced in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, as another Territorial Army soldier falls victim to abduction. Recently, a soldier was kidnapped by militants from Shangus in the Kokernag area, while another soldier managed to escape after being abducted. In response, a joint team comprising the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police has launched an extensive search operation in the region, meticulously combing the surrounding areas for any clues that might lead to the soldier’s whereabouts.

This recent incident echoes a similar tragic event that occurred in August 2020, when Territorial Army soldier Shakir Manzoor Wagay was kidnapped in Kashmir. On August 2, 2020, 24-year-old Shakir went missing near his residence in Harmain, Shopian, south Kashmir. Five days after his disappearance, his family discovered his clothes near their home, heightening fears for his safety.

Shakir was serving in the 162-TA unit stationed at Balapur in south Kashmir. On the day of his abduction, he had been posted at the Balapora camp. After completing his official duties, Shakir was permitted to leave the camp and had informed his family that he would return within an hour. Tragically, terrorists abducted him during this time, also burning his vehicle as a means of intimidation.

Despite extensive search efforts, Shakir remained missing for over a year. In September 2021, his lifeless body was discovered in Kashmir’s Kulgam district. Following an investigation, the police confirmed the identity of the body and reached out to Shakir’s family. His father, Manzoor Ahmad Wagay, expressed profound sorrow upon identifying his son’s remains. “My son was a soldier. I want to ask the terrorists to give us his body,” he stated, reflecting the deep anguish and loss felt by the family.

The ongoing search for the recently abducted soldier in Anantnag underscores the persistent threat posed by terrorism in the region. The Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police remain committed to ensuring the safety of their personnel and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
