New Delhi: Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, currently on an official visit to India, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi on Monday. The leaders jointly inaugurated the new runway of Hanimadhu International Airport in the Maldives via a virtual ceremony, marking another milestone in the growing India-Maldives relationship.
In a significant move to deepen economic ties, the RuPay card payment system was launched in the Maldives, with both leaders witnessing the first transaction. The RuPay card system is expected to simplify transactions for Indian tourists and improve financial connectivity between the two nations.
Speaking on the long-standing bond between the two countries, PM Modi said, “India and Maldives relations are centuries old. India is the closest neighbour and close friend of Maldives. Maldives occupies an important place in our Neighbourhood First Policy and SAGAR Vision.”
The leaders also discussed key aspects of defence and security cooperation, with a focus on stability in the Indian Ocean region. PM Modi welcomed the Maldives to the Colombo Security Conclave as a founding member, emphasising joint efforts for regional stability and prosperity.
