Kolkata: A tragic incident has shaken the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal, where a minor girl was allegedly raped and murdered in Jayanagar, prompting severe backlash against the Mamata Banerjee-led state government. The police confirmed the heinous crime on Sunday, sparking widespread outrage and demands for immediate action.
Governor CV Ananda Bose issued a strong statement on Saturday evening from the Governor House, directly blaming the West Bengal government for its inadequate response to the rape and murder case at RG Kar Medical College. He asserted that the government’s failure to act promptly has created an environment where such violent crimes are increasingly prevalent.
“Rape incidents are increasing due to lack of timely action. The government needs to take firm and decisive action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime, otherwise it will be tantamount to promoting rape and violence in the state,” Governor Bose stated. He further emphasized, “It’s high time the government realised that prevention is better than cure. That there is no cure for violence in the present government in Bengal is quite strange.”
The discovery of the minor’s body led to immediate unrest in Jayanagar. In the aftermath of the incident, locals set fire to a police post and vandalised several vehicles in a display of their frustration and anger towards the authorities. These acts of violence underscore the community’s deep dissatisfaction with how the state has handled such serious crimes.
Police authorities have reported that one individual has been arrested in connection with the rape and murder of the minor girl. However, this arrest has done little to quell the public’s anger, as demands for more comprehensive and effective measures against such crimes intensify.
Governor Bose concluded his statement by urging the state government to adopt a proactive stance in preventing violence: “Prevention is better than cure,” he reiterated, highlighting that the current administration’s failure to act is both baffling and detrimental to the safety and well-being of West Bengal’s residents.
