Bengaluru: In a significant development, the special court in Bengaluru has mandated a thorough investigation by the Karnataka Lokayukta into allegations against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah concerning the Mysore Urban Development Authority (MUDA) scam. The court has directed the Mysuru district police under the Lokayukta’s jurisdiction to commence the inquiry and submit their findings within six weeks.
The High Court has upheld the prosecution of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with the MUDA scam, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive investigation. This decision follows private complaints lodged by Snehamai Krishna and TJ Abraham of Mysuru, who accused Siddaramaiah of being involved in financial irregularities related to the MUDA project.
During the proceedings, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah challenged the Governor’s actions in the High Court. The court had previously reserved its verdict pending the completion of the special court hearings by public representatives. On Wednesday, the special court delivered its verdict, invoking the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) to proceed with the investigation.
As per Section 156(3) of the CrPC, the Mysuru Lokayukta police are authorised to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Siddaramaiah following the court’s directive. The investigating officer holds the authority to arrest the Chief Minister if necessary, potentially escalating the legal challenges faced by Siddaramaiah.
Reacting to the court’s order, Siddaramaiah stated, “The High Court yesterday ordered an inquiry under Section 17A. After the order of the High Court, the Public Representative Court has given the verdict. I will respond after I get a copy of the court order.” He further asserted his readiness to cooperate with the investigation, adding, “I am ready to face the investigation. I am not afraid of investigation.”
Siddaramaiah clarified that he had not yet reviewed the full court order and intends to do so upon his return from Kerala. He assured that he would consult with his legal team and consider an appeal to the Supreme Court if necessary. Additionally, he mentioned that the court has not imposed any restrictions on the inquiry commission previously formed by his administration.
The investigation, led by the Mysore Lokayukta, will focus on uncovering any financial discrepancies and potential misuse of authority within the MUDA project. The outcome of this probe could have significant political ramifications, especially as the state gears up for upcoming elections.
