Washington, D.C.: A significant development emerged from the recent QUAD summit, where the United States, India, Australia, and Japan collectively endorsed reforms to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In a joint declaration known as the “Wilmington Declaration,” the QUAD countries expressed their support for India’s permanent membership in the UNSC, marking a potential turning point in India’s long-standing aspirations.
India has been advocating for UNSC reforms for years, yet faced challenges primarily due to China’s opposition. The QUAD statement not only reaffirmed the need for reform but also highlighted the necessity of expanding permanent seats to ensure representation from Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
During the summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, where the White House reiterated its support for India’s bid for permanent membership. This endorsement reflects a growing recognition of India’s role in global governance and its importance as a democratic voice on the world stage.
The UNSC, one of the six principal organs of the United Nations, comprises 15 member countries, including five permanent members (the “P5”) with veto power: the United States, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and China. While India has established strong ties with most of these nations, its relationship with China remains a significant hurdle. However, support from the other P5 members could pave the way for India’s acceptance into this exclusive club.
As one of the founding members of the United Nations and currently the world’s fifth-largest economy, India’s qualifications for permanent membership are robust. The country has emerged as a global leader, attracting investment and playing a vital role in international peacekeeping missions. The successful hosting of the G20 summit has further bolstered India’s case for greater representation in global institutions.
The QUAD joint statement, alongside the supportive remarks from the U.S., has raised hopes that India’s dream of permanent UNSC membership could soon be realised, provided that China does not obstruct this progress. With the collective support of key international players, the path for India appears to be opening, underscoring its importance in the contemporary global landscape.
