Tirupati: The use of animal fat in the famed Tirupati laddus has sparked widespread protest and concern, leading to a political uproar in Andhra Pradesh. Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has stated the government’s commitment to taking “the strictest possible action” against any such practices, amid mounting public discontent.
Union Food Minister Pralhad Joshi has called for a thorough investigation into claims made by former Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, who alleged that the YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led government used substandard materials, including animal fat, in the preparation of the sacred prasadam at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple. Joshi stressed the need for accountability, stating, “The matter needs to be thoroughly probed and the guilty should be punished.”
In response to these allegations, the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has vehemently denied any wrongdoing and has approached the High Court for a probe into the claims. The court is set to hear the matter next Wednesday, with YSRCP leaders demanding an inquiry led by a sitting judge or a High Court committee.
Pawan Kalyan has voiced his concerns on social media, emphasizing that the mixing of animal fat—specifically fish oil, beef fat, and pork fat—in the laddus has caused significant distress among devotees. He also pointed to broader issues related to temple desecration and religious practices, advocating for the formation of a national Sanatan Dharma Raksha Board to address these concerns.
The controversy has resonated deeply with the public, with BJP MP Sanjay Jaiswal stating that the integrity of the Tirupati prasadam, which is cherished by devotees worldwide, is at stake. He accused the YSRCP of conspiring to tarnish Hindu faith.
Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit echoed the call for a serious investigation, suggesting that the prasadam should be tested in multiple laboratories to ensure transparency and uphold the integrity of Tirupati laddus, which are known for their popularity across the nation.
As the political tensions rise and public sentiment intensifies, the future of the Tirupati prasadam and the associated rituals remain under scrutiny, with many calling for clarity and accountability in the ongoing controversy.
