College Corruption Controversy: Court Custody For Former Principal

Kolkata: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court has sent Dr Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, to judicial custody until 23 September over alleged financial irregularities during his tenure. The special CBI court in Alipur also remanded three others — Ghosh’s security guard, Afsar Ali, and contractors Biplab Sinha and Suman Hazra — to judicial custody.

The CBI has stated that it may seek further custody if necessary, as investigations continue into both financial misconduct and possible connections to a shocking murder case that has gripped the institution.

Ongoing Investigation into Doctor’s Death

The investigation into the financial misconduct coincides with a separate but related inquiry into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month. The doctor’s body was discovered under mysterious circumstances, and the case has raised numerous questions regarding the internal workings of the hospital.

The CBI took over the investigation from Kolkata Police on 13 August following orders from the Calcutta High Court. During their inquiry, it was discovered that Dr Ghosh had ordered the partial demolition of a toilet near the crime scene on 10 August. The partial demolition, carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD), is suspected to have destroyed crucial evidence that could have aided in the investigation of the doctor’s death.

Financial Misconduct Under Scrutiny

As the investigation delved deeper, additional allegations of financial irregularities under Ghosh’s leadership surfaced. A petition filed by former deputy superintendent Dr Akhtar Ali has called for an Enforcement Directorate (ED) probe into the financial dealings during Ghosh’s tenure. Dr Ali has suggested that the alleged corruption could be linked to the murder, speculating that the victim might have uncovered the financial mismanagement and possibly threatened to expose it.

The accusations against Dr Ghosh have added fuel to the ongoing protests demanding justice for the murdered doctor. The CBI continues to probe both the financial irregularities and the circumstances surrounding the doctor’s death, amid rising concerns about internal affairs at the hospital.

Unanswered Questions Remain

The revelations of possible destruction of evidence and financial misconduct have intensified the complexities surrounding this case. Investigators are under pressure to uncover the truth behind both the alleged financial irregularities and the shocking murder, with the broader hospital community anxiously awaiting further developments.
