Former Jharkhand CM Champai Soren to Join BJP, Secures Z-Plus Security

Ranchi: Former Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren is set to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after a significant meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Following this development, Soren has been granted Z-plus category security, which will be implemented once he arrives in Ranchi from Delhi.

Sources indicate that Soren is likely to resign from the Hemant Soren-led cabinet on August 28 and formally join the BJP on August 30 in Ranchi. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed Soren’s decision to join the BJP, making the announcement via a post on social media.

The move follows a series of meetings between Soren and key BJP leaders, including Amit Shah and Himanta Biswa Sarma, sparking speculation about his political future. Sarma, who was present during the meeting between Soren and Shah, later confirmed that Soren’s entry into the BJP is now official and will take place at the end of August.

Champai Soren, a prominent tribal leader and a former chief minister who briefly served Jharkhand between February and July, has expressed dissatisfaction with his current party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), and its leadership. Soren recently voiced his grievances on social media, stating that he had been removed from the post of chief minister without prior notice and that his scheduled programmes were abruptly cancelled.

Soren’s influence in Jharkhand politics, particularly in the Kolhan division, is significant. As a six-time MLA from Seraikela since 1991, his potential shift to the BJP could have a substantial impact on the upcoming Jharkhand Assembly elections, expected to take place between October and November this year.

The announcement of Soren’s departure from JMM and his expected alignment with the BJP comes after earlier discussions of forming a new political party. However, his recent interactions with BJP leaders suggest that he has decided to align with the party instead.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, who has played a crucial role in Soren’s transition, has welcomed the former chief minister to the BJP, expressing confidence that Soren will become a significant asset to the party.
