Nagaon, Assam: Tafazul Islam, the prime suspect in the harrowing Nagaon Dhing gangrape case, has died following a dramatic escape attempt from police custody. According to authorities, Islam attempted to flee while being taken to the crime scene early on Friday morning, ultimately meeting his end after jumping into a nearby pond.
Police reported that the incident occurred around 4 am when Islam, who was being escorted by officers to the location of the crime, made a sudden dash for freedom and leapt into the pond. A two-hour search ensued, after which his body was recovered from the water.
Islam was one of three men accused of the brutal gangrape of a Class 10 student in Nagaon. The assault took place as the girl was returning home from tuition. She was found unconscious and in a critical state by a passer-by, who immediately alerted the police. The victim was rushed to Nagaon Medical College and Hospital, where she remains under care.
The horrifying incident has sparked widespread outrage across Assam, with residents and various organisations staging protests demanding justice for the minor. The protests have continued, with calls for an indefinite shutdown in the area until all suspects are apprehended.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has condemned the incident, labelling it as “a crime against humanity” that has deeply affected the collective conscience of the community. He assured the public that no effort would be spared in bringing the perpetrators to justice. “I have instructed the DGP of Assam Police to visit the scene and ensure swift justice against such monsters,” Sarma said.
State Cabinet Minister Pijush Hazarika also visited the victim in Dhing, confirming that her condition had stabilised. Both the Chief Minister and Minister Hazarika have vowed to pursue justice relentlessly in this case, which has left the state in shock and mourning.
