New Delhi: In the wake of national disappointment over Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics, few could have fathomed the depth of her personal anguish. On Saturday, 17 August, at around 10:45 am, that anguish was laid bare as the wrestling star returned to an emotional reception at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
Phogat, who missed her chance at Olympic glory due to a mere 100-gram weight discrepancy, was ruled out not only of the final but the entire event. Despite challenging the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), her appeal was rejected, costing her a likely silver medal. Nonetheless, preparations for a hero’s welcome had already been made before her return to the country.
As she emerged from the airport, Phogat was met with the loud cheers of a throng of supporters, including family, friends, villagers, and well-wishers. Among those present was Congress MP from Rohtak, Deepender Singh Hooda, who escorted her out. Chants of her name grew louder as she came into view, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of drums.
The most poignant moment came when Phogat embraced her fellow wrestlers and close friends, Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, both of whom had arrived early to greet her. Overcome with emotion, Phogat broke down, her tears flowing freely as the trio clung to each other in a heartfelt embrace. Her mother, cradling her daughter’s face, also succumbed to tears, adding to the already charged atmosphere. Even Sakshi’s eyes glistened with tears, while Bajrang silently fought back his emotions.
Phogat’s tears marked a stark contrast to the stoic smile she had maintained in Paris, masking the bitter disappointment. As she was eventually seated in a Mercedes, with Punia, Malik, and Hooda accompanying her, the crowd erupted once more, chanting her name as the convoy began its journey to her village.
This emotional homecoming, filled with both pride and sorrow, exemplified the nation’s unwavering support for its athletes, even in the face of defeat.
