KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will lead a rally on August 17 to demand speedy investigation and justice in the Kolkata rape and murder case. The meeting, organized by the Trinamool Congress (TMC), was aimed at putting pressure on the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take swift action to solve the case.
TMC leader and MP Derek O’Brien closed the meeting saying, “It is hard to imagine a more barbaric, heinous crime than the murder and rape of a young girl in Kolkata,” stressing how the investigation takes emphasizing urgency and called on the CBI to do so should provide frequent updates on their progress.
The chief minister directed the CBI to fulfill the deadline given to the Kolkata police by Saturday to complete its investigation. O’Brien also emphasized that the arrest of the suspect must include everyone involved in the crime. He said justice would be done only after the CBI arrests all the accused.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests across the country under the ‘get the night back’ movement. However, protests in Kolkata turned violent when a group of 40 to 50 members vandalized a local hospital on August 14. The Kolkata police arrested 19 people in connection with the incident. O’Brien demanded accountability for those involved in destructive behavior and stressed that such actions should not diminish the fight for justice.
The meeting comes as the country grapples with growing unrest over the handling of the case, calling for harsher punishment for those responsible for the atrocities. Mamata Banerjee’s rally on August 17 is expected to attract a lot of attention as calls for justice intensify.
