Kolkata: A Special Crime Team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) visited RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Thursday as part of their ongoing investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor last week. The team completed an extensive inspection of the hospital and also summoned five doctors for questioning. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, 12 individuals were arrested for an attack on the hospital that occurred on Wednesday, August 14, during ongoing protests by doctors.
The CBI team carried out a detailed examination from the first floor to the fourth floor of the hospital. Their inspection included assessing the damage caused by the mob and verifying whether the room where the alleged crime took place was also affected. The investigators also questioned the officer-in-charge of Tala Police Station, which has jurisdiction over the hospital area.
It has been two days since the CBI officially took charge of the case. The agency is currently piecing together what transpired on the night of the incident. Their investigation includes reviewing the original police inquiry and assessing the level of cooperation from hospital authorities. Sources indicate that the CBI is particularly interested in gathering information about Sandeep Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College. Following this, the nursing staff and members of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) formed by the Kolkata Police will also be questioned.
The situation took a violent turn on Wednesday when a large group of unidentified people stormed RG Kar Hospital amid protests by doctors. The assailants vandalized the emergency department, nursing stations, and even pharmacies. They also damaged CCTV cameras and destroyed the stage where junior doctors had been holding a protest since August 9. In response, police were forced to use batons and tear gas shells to control the mob, leading to the arrest of 12 suspects involved in the attack.
As the CBI intensifies its probe into the tragic death of the trainee doctor, the atmosphere around RG Kar Hospital remains tense, with protests and unrest showing no signs of easing.
