New Delhi: The decision regarding whether Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat will be awarded the silver medal has been postponed once again. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) is now expected to deliver its verdict on August 11 by 6 p.m., following a hearing that concluded recently. This development comes after Vinesh’s disqualification in the women’s 50 kg weight category at the wrestling finals on August 7.
Phogat, one of India’s leading wrestlers, was disqualified just before the final match due to being 100 grams over the prescribed weight limit during the official weigh-in. According to United World Wrestling (UWW) regulations, any wrestler found to be overweight is disqualified from the entire tournament. Despite reaching the final, Phogat’s silver medal was taken away, and she was ranked last among the competitors.
In response to her disqualification, Phogat filed an appeal with CAS on the evening of August 7. Initially, she requested that the final be halted and that she be given another opportunity to compete. However, CAS quickly dismissed this request, stating that they could not stop the final. Subsequently, Phogat’s appeal was amended to request the silver medal that she would have won if not for the disqualification.
Following the appeal, Vinesh Phogat, 29, announced her retirement from wrestling, expressing that she no longer had the strength to continue fighting. Her disqualification and subsequent retirement have led to widespread disappointment and frustration across India. The incident has even been discussed in Parliament, where opposition members have called for government intervention.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been involved in the matter, reportedly speaking with Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha, who is currently in Paris. The Prime Minister requested a full briefing on the situation and urged Usha to assist in any way possible.
The CAS verdict, expected on August 11, will determine whether Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for the silver medal will be upheld or denied. The outcome of this decision is highly anticipated, as it holds significant implications not only for Phogat’s career but also for the larger sporting community in India.
