Former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina Seeks Safe Haven in Europe Amidst Unrest

Ghaziabad: Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled her country following violent unrest, is currently in a secure location at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh. She is expected to travel to Europe within the next 48 hours, though her exact destination remains undisclosed.

Initial reports suggested Hasina might seek refuge in London; however, the UK government denied her entry. Similarly, the US has canceled her visa, leaving her options limited. Presently, she is considering several European countries and is also in discussions with Russia as a potential refuge.

India has pledged to provide full security and arrange for Hasina’s safe departure. Sources indicate that the aircraft which transported her to India, belonging to the Bangladesh Air Force, has returned to Bangladesh, necessitating India’s involvement in her onward travel arrangements.

While Finland and Russia are among the potential destinations being considered, Hasina had initially planned to seek temporary asylum in London with her sister, Sheikh Rehana. This option was dismissed despite Rehana’s daughter, Tulip Siddique, being a member of the British Parliament and holding the position of Economic Secretary to the Treasury.

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy commented on the situation, stating, “Hasina has informed New Delhi about her possible future steps. It has also been learnt that Hasina’s family members are in Finland, which is why she is considering moving to the northern European country.”

India continues to coordinate Hasina’s safe passage and is in contact with various nations to ensure her secure relocation.
