New Delhi/Dhaka: In response to the recent coup in Bangladesh, the Indian government has heightened security measures, particularly in the northeastern states bordering Bangladesh. The Border Security Force (BSF) has issued a ‘high alert’ along the 4,096 km India-Bangladesh border. Acting Director General (DG) of BSF Daljit Singh Chaudhary and other senior commanders have arrived in Kolkata to assess the security situation.
A spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF stated that due to the evolving situation in Bangladesh, the BSF has increased the number of troops along the border and cancelled the leaves of all personnel. All units have been instructed to remain on full alert to prevent any potential spillover of violence into Indian territory.
In Dhaka, chaos ensued as miscreants stormed the Prime Minister’s residence on Monday, vandalizing and looting belongings from the Prime Minister’s bedroom. As violence escalated, Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country and is currently in India. After traveling from Dhaka to Tripura, she arrived at Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad. Her aircraft remains stationed there.
Back in New Delhi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the situation during a meeting at Parliament House amidst the ongoing budget session. Concurrently, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi met with Jaishankar to gather information about the unfolding crisis in Bangladesh.
So far, Sheikh Hasina has not requested political support from India. She is currently at Hindon Airbase in Ghaziabad, where she met with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Sources indicate that plans are underway to move Sheikh Hasina to a secure location within India.
