New Delhi: In an unusual turn of events during the Lok Sabha session on Friday, August 2, 2024, Speaker Om Birla publicly reprimanded Congress whip Manickam Tagore for his conduct in the House. The incident occurred during the Question Hour when Union Health Minister JP Nadda was responding to a query.
Manickam Tagore was observed standing behind his seat, conversing with another MP from the opposition bench, with his back facing the Speaker’s podium. Noticing this, Speaker Om Birla interrupted Minister Nadda’s response to address Tagore’s behavior directly. “You do not stand behind the back,” Birla asserted, highlighting the breach of parliamentary decorum. In response, Tagore questioned how he should stand, prompting further admonition from the Speaker. Birla retorted, “I will give that training to you too,” expressing his displeasure with the Congress MP’s retort.
The exchange did not end there. During the session, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Pradip Purohit referred to an episode from the Ramayana while asking a question related to the Ministry of AYUSH. In response, Speaker Birla made a pointed remark, advising members to focus on relevant questions rather than digressing into mythological narratives. “You don’t narrate Mahabharata, ask questions,” he said, noting a growing trend of MPs incorporating such stories into their discourse.
The incident underscores the Speaker’s commitment to maintaining decorum and discipline within the Lok Sabha, emphasizing the importance of adhering to parliamentary etiquette. The reprimand serves as a reminder to all members about the expected standards of behavior in the House.
