New Delhi: Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh has formally requested the initiation of privilege proceedings against Union Home Minister Amit Shah under Rules 187 of the Procedure and Conduct of Business in the Rajya Sabha. The request, made on Friday, follows Shah’s remarks in the Rajya Sabha regarding the recent landslide incident in Wayanad, Kerala.
In a letter addressed to the Rajya Sabha, Ramesh stated that on July 31, Shah claimed the central government had issued an early warning alert before the landslide tragedy in Wayanad. According to Shah, the alert was ignored by the Kerala government, leading to the disaster. He emphasized the central government’s proactive measures, suggesting that the state’s alleged inaction contributed to the severity of the incident.
However, Ramesh countered these claims, citing extensive media fact-checking, including a report published by The Hindu on August 2, 2024. He asserted that the statements made by Shah in the Rajya Sabha were “completely false.” According to Ramesh, there was no such early warning issued by the central government, and Shah’s accusations against the Kerala government were baseless.
Ramesh further argued that misleading the House by a minister or member constitutes a breach of privilege and contempt of the House. He called for privilege proceedings to be initiated against Amit Shah, accusing him of deliberately misleading the Rajya Sabha with incorrect information.
The controversy centers on Shah’s remarks that the central government had issued a warning on July 23, which the Kerala government purportedly ignored. The allegations have sparked a political uproar, with Congress leaders demanding accountability and transparency.
