New Delhi: A sudden downpour on Wednesday evening led to severe flooding across multiple areas of Delhi, with Old Rajendra Nagar being among the worst affected. This area, which recently witnessed a tragic incident where three students lost their lives due to basement flooding, experienced knee-deep water once more. The flooding has sparked renewed concerns and highlighted the city’s vulnerability to heavy rainfall.
Taking proactive measures in response to the recent tragedy, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Durgesh Pathak was seen actively involved in addressing the flooding. Pathak personally visited the waterlogged streets of Rajendra Nagar, coordinating drainage efforts. The AAP shared a video of Pathak’s efforts on the social media platform ‘X,’ stating, “AAP MLA Durgesh Pathak is present at ground zero in Rajendra Nagar. He is arranging drainage in front of himself. Taking a lesson from the previous case, the AAP government is on alert mode this time.”
The flooding and the city’s preparedness have drawn attention and criticism from various quarters. Rajya Sabha MP Swati Maliwal posted a video on ‘X,’ questioning the government’s accountability. “This is the situation near Rau IAS of Old Rajendra Nagar. The administrative murder of innocent students three days ago, the same situation again? Even now, no one will be held accountable even if the drains are not cleaned?” she wrote, highlighting the urgent need for infrastructure improvements to prevent such incidents.
Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor also addressed the situation via ‘X,’ stating that all officials have been instructed to stay vigilant in light of the heavy rains. He emphasised the need to minimise inconvenience to the public and urged authorities to focus on areas prone to waterlogging, including the city’s numerous coaching centres.
The situation in Old Rajendra Nagar and other affected areas underscores the challenges Delhi faces with its drainage infrastructure, particularly during the monsoon season. As the city deals with the immediate impacts of the heavy rains, the focus remains on ensuring public safety and addressing the systemic issues that contribute to recurring flooding.
