New Delhi: A video of actress and Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament Jaya Bachchan expressing her displeasure over being addressed as “Jaya Amitabh Bachchan” has gone viral on social media. The incident occurred in the Rajya Sabha on Monday, when Deputy Speaker Harivansh Narayan Singh referred to her by her husband’s name during a session.
Visibly upset, Jaya Bachchan objected to the Deputy Speaker’s address, stating, “Sir, if only ‘Jaya Bachchan’ had been spoken, it would have been enough.” She criticised the growing trend of identifying women by their husbands’ names, highlighting the issue of gender bias. “This new trend has started where women are known by the names of their husbands. They don’t exist; they have no achievements,” she remarked, expressing her frustration.
Bachchan further emphasised the importance of respecting women’s identities and accomplishments, independent of their marital status. She urged that politics should not overshadow this fundamental issue, saying, “Everybody is doing their own politics. There should be no politics over the issue.”
During her address, she also touched on the responsibilities of municipal corporations. Recalling her experience when she took her oath as an MP, Bachchan shared, “When I came here to take oath, my house (in Mumbai) was in shambles. It was knee-deep in water. The job of this agency is so bad that don’t ask. We are responsible for it because we don’t complain, and action doesn’t take place.”
The incident has sparked a conversation on social media about the importance of acknowledging women by their own identities and the broader issues of gender equality in public discourse.
