New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has secured a significant win in the Amarwada by-election in Madhya Pradesh’s Chhindwara district, reclaiming the assembly seat after 16 years. The last time BJP won in Amarwada was in the 2008 assembly elections with Prem Narayan Thakur.
The by-election saw a dramatic shift in fortunes during the counting process. The BJP led for the first four rounds, but Congress candidate Dhiran Shah then took the lead and maintained it until the 17th round. However, in the 18th round, BJP candidate Kamlesh Shah surged ahead by 600 votes, a lead he maintained through the remaining three rounds. Ultimately, Kamlesh Shah won by a margin of 3,242 votes.
Congress leader Mukesh Nayak commented on the close contest, noting that the Congress candidate led for 17 rounds before the BJP made a comeback. Nayak suggested that the lunch break before the final rounds might have influenced the outcome. He emphasized that the narrow margin of victory for the BJP, compared to previous elections, indicated strong public support for the Congress.
Despite allegations from Congress candidate Dhiran Shah about disturbances in the counting process and demands for a recount, BJP’s Amarwada by-election in-charge Uike dismissed these claims as frustration over the defeat. Uike asserted that the public voted for BJP in the name of development.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav congratulated the people and BJP workers of Amarwada on their victory. He stated that the win reflects the people’s faith in BJP’s ideology and their trust in the party’s vision for development.
