New Delhi: Lalit Jha, the alleged mastermind behind a conspiracy to attack the Parliament House on the 22nd anniversary of the 2001 attack, was arrested by police on Saturday.
According to police, Jha had convened a meeting in Gurugram, Haryana, with his co-conspirators, where he instructed them to delete all evidence from their mobile phones before the planned attack. Following the meeting, Jha went into hiding.
Acting on intelligence, police tracked Jha’s last known location to Neemrana in Rajasthan, where he was reportedly associated with an NGO working for tribal communities.
On Wednesday, police arrested four of Jha’s accomplices, Sagar Sharma, Manoranjan D, Neelam Azad, and Amol Shinde, from inside and outside the Parliament building. The four accused were produced in the Patiala House Court, which remanded them to seven days of police custody.
During interrogation, the arrested individuals revealed that they had met Jha online and had collectively planned to create a disturbance within the Parliament.
Police had initially sought a 15-day custody of the accused, but the court granted only seven days. Another accused in the case, Vicky Sharma, was apprehended along with his wife, but both were released after questioning.
Sharma’s home in Gurugram’s Sector 7 Housing Board Colony served as a temporary residence for the conspirators before they departed for Delhi to execute their plan.
The investigation is ongoing, and police are working to gather further evidence and track down any remaining accomplices involved in the conspiracy.
