Patna: A day after saying ‘jo piyega wo marega’ (those who consume alcohol will die), Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar said the state won’t give compensation to families of those who lost their lives after taking spurious liquor in the state.
“No compensation will be given to people who died after drinking. We have been appealing — if you drink, you will die… those who talk in favour of drinking will not bring any good to you,” Nitish said during his address in the state Assembly on Friday.
The number of deaths in the spurious liquor case in Bihar’s Saran district rose to 53.
BJP leaders continued to protest against Nitish’s stand on the issue, inside and outside the Assembly, demanding his resignation.
A delegation of BJP leaders are scheduled to meet Bihar Governor Paghu Chauhan to vent their anger against Nitish and urge action against him.
Despite sale and consumption of alcohol being banned in Bihar by the Nitish government in 2016, liquor deaths have not stopped in the state.
Following the Saran incident, another incident was reported from Bihar’s Siwan where four people reportedly died after allegedly consuming spurious liquor.
