Birmingham: India’s wrestlers continued their stellar show in the Commonwealth Games 2022 as Ravi Kumar Dahiya clinched gold in men’s 57kg freestyle event on Saturday.
It was India’s 10th gold medal of the Games, and fourth in wrestling.
Pooja Gehlot added to Indian tally, claiming a bronze in women’s 50kg freestyle.
India is currently in 5th place in the medals tally, with 10 gold, 11 silver and 10 bronze. The tally is set to swell with many more medals certain in wrestling, badminton, table tennis, boxing and cricket.
Dahiya, a silver-medallist in the Tokyo Olympics, outplayed Nigerian Ebikewenimo Welson 10-0 in the final bout to bag his maiden CWG medal on first attempt. He had missed the 2018 Gold Coast Games due to an injury, which kept him away from the sport for over a year.
The 24-year-old Ravi finished off his opponent in 2 minutes and 16 seconds with a technical superiority verdict.
Ravi earlier saw off Suraj Singh of New Zealand 10-0 in just 74 seconds, before prevailing 14-4 over Pakistan’s Ali Asad in 3 minutes and 17 seconds in the semifinal.
