Birmingham: India’s Bindyarani Devi clinched silver in women’s 55 kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2022, taking the country’s medal tally to four.
The 23-year-old lifted a total of 202 kg: 116 kg in her final clean and jerk attempt and 86 kg in snatch round to win silver.
There were tense moments though when Bindyarani looked set for bronze when she failed to lift 114 kg in her second clean and jerk attempt.
Nigeria’s Adijat Adenike Olarinoye won the gold medal, lifting 203 kg (92 kg + 111 kg).
Earlier, Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in women’s 49 kg weightlifting competition. The 27-year-old lifter from Imphal successfully lifted 88 kg in her second snatch attempt to set a Games and national record.
India opened its medal account in the Birmingham Games courtesy of Sanket Mahadev Sargar’s silver in men’s 55 kg weightlifting event with a total lift of 248 kg (113 + 135), while Gururaja Poojary won bronze in men’s 61 kg category.
