Hyderabad: Ram Gopal Varma has landed in trouble for his comments on NDA’s Presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu.
“If DRAUPADI is the PRESIDENT who are the PANDAVAS? And more importantly, who are the KAURAVAS?” the filmmaker had tweeted.
Finding it derogatory, senior Telangana BJP leader G Narayan Reddy lodged a complaint against Varma at Abids police station.
“We have received the complaint and sent the same for a legal opinion. After we receive the legal opinion, we shall book a case against Varma under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act,” Abids police inspector B Prasada Rao was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Reddy said in his complaint that Varma’s comments were highly derogatory and humiliating for a senior lady politician and former Jharkhand Governor. He attached Varma’s tweet as evidence with the complaint.
A chorus of protest followed.
Sensing the mood, RGV went into damage-control mode on Friday.
“This was said just in an earnest irony and not intended in any other way ..Draupadi in Mahabharata is my favourite character but since the name is such a rarity I just remembered the associated characters and hence my expression. Not at all intended to hurt sentiments of anyone,” Varma tweeted today.

That may not deter Hyderabad police from registering a case against him.
