British Tourist Raped At Goa Beach; This Is Not The First Such Incident Here

Panaji:  The Goa Police on Monday arrested a 32-year-old man for allegedly raping a British woman at the famous Sweet Lake near Arambol beach in North Goa. The accused Joel Vincent D’Souza, a local resident, allegedly raped the middle-aged British woman on June 2 when she was relaxing at the beach, a senior police officer told PTI.

The victim, who is on a Goa visit with her husband, filed a complaint with the police on Monday.

The accused has been arrested and further investigation is underway,” the police officer was quoted as saying.

This is not the first time that a tourist has been raped in Goa.

May 12, 2022: The Goa Police arrested a man from his home town in Karnataka for allegedly raping a 12-year-old Russian girl at a resort in Arambol in North Goa, where he worked as a room attendant. The accused, Ravi Lamani (28), a married man, was arrested by a team of Pernem police on 10 May at Gadag in Karnataka for the incident of sexual assault that had happened on 6 May. The mother of the victim had lodged a complaint on 9 May.

July 25, 2021: Four men posing as policemen at Goa’s Benaulim Beach allegedly raped two minor girls. The accused had threatened to upload photos of the incident on social media platforms if they weren’t paid Rs 65,000.

January 26, 2010: A nine-year-old Russian girl was raped on Arambol beach while she was on a holiday with her mother. One of the two accused had engaged the mother in a conversation while the crime was being committed.
