New Delhi: An 81-year-old man was arrested by Gautam Budh Nagar Police in UP for alleged ‘digital rape’ of a minor.
The term ‘digital rape’ means forced sex or penetration with a woman or girl using any object/part other than the reproductive organ – for example, fingers or toes.
Digital rape was not under the ambit of rape until December 2012. The Nirbhaya gang rape case led to reforms in India’s criminal laws and digital rape was included under the classification of a sexual offence.
PTI quoted a police spokesperson as saying that the victim, a 17-year-old girl, lives with her guardian, who has been a friend of the accused for 20 years.
The girl was initially scared to lodge a complaint but then started recording the suspect’s sexual advances and collected ample evidence.
She finally opened up about the ordeal she had been facing for seven years to her guardian, who then approached the police.
An FIR was lodged against the accused under IPC sections 376 (rape), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (criminal intimidation).
The elderly man, an artist-cum-teacher, was arrested on Sunday.
