Unmarried Adult Couple Can Live Together Even If Man Isn’t Of Marriageable Age: HC

New Delhi: Unmarried adults can’t be denied the right to live together just because the man hasn’t attained marriageable age, the Punjab and Haryana High Court ruled on Wednesday.

Hearing a plea of a 19-year-old boy and 21-year-old girl who want to marry each other, Justice Alka Sarin observed that the couple being adults have every right to live their lives as per their desires and that society can’t determine that, Hindustan Times reported.

The freedom to choose one’s partner is an important facet of the right to life, the bench noted.

The couple’s plea stated that the girl was beaten up by her parents and locked up in a room. However, she managed to escape on December 20 and went to live with the boy.

The court further said that the girl is within her rights to decide what is good for her.
