New Delhi: The Supreme Court (SC) of India on Wednesday directed all print, electronic and social media organizations to refrain from airing or publishing unverified news related to COVID-19 that can potentially cause panic.
SC pointed out that the movement of a large number of migrant labourers was triggered off by fake news circulating that the coronavirus induced lockdown would be implemented for over three months. The panic-driven migration has caused suffering and even loss of lives, SC noted.
The order has asked media outlets to carry official versions about the crisis. The SC clarified that it doesn’t wish to interfere with free-discussion about the crisis.
